God’s Justice Will not be Denied

Read Hebrews 10:30-39, Psalm 94
God’s Justice Will not be Denied

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:19b NLT

What should be our means of retribution and retaliation for people who hurt us? Should we retaliate in kind on the spot? Should we follow the conventional wisdom of the world and “don’t get mad — get even,” and begin plotting as to how we will pay back with interest the hurt received?

Before we do any of the above, we should ask, what would Jesus do? Jesus forgave and asked God to forgive those who humiliated and mocked Him. He tells us, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. “ (Luke 6:27 NIV)

We might also consider what God would do.

We don’t need to worry about wrongdoers getting their just desserts.

God says that vengeance belongs to Him. Our all powerful, all knowing God has said that the sins of the wicked will not go unpunished. We may never see God’s punishment of the wicked, but we can be sure from God’s infallible Word that He will mete it out in the time and manner He deems appropriate.

Knowing that God is much better at avenging than we could ever hope to be, we might better use all of the energy and emotion that getting even entails by spending it on something more positive, like loving and forgiving others as God has loved and forgiven us.

We need to realize that our only hope for escaping the consequences of our sins is confessing and receiving God’s forgiveness through the blood of Jesus. God also says our sins will not be forgiven unless we forgive others. Dare we presume to try to get even?

Father, help me respond with love and forgiveness to those who cause me harm. In Jesus’ name, Amen
