Cut Out the Junk Food

Cut Out the Junk Food
“Then Jesus explained: ‘My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent Me, and from finishing His work.’” John 4:34
We all have two natures fighting for control of our lives. Although the ultimate victory has been won for us by Jesus’s death on the cross, we have to fend off attacks daily by our old sin nature trying to regain control of our lives.
We are all too often guilty of feeding the wrong nature. When we spend hours feeding on junk food like TV trash, internet porn, and pursuing ego-pleasing approval, possessions, and power, we are creating a monster that will keep us from knowing the real joy of the Lord and ultimately lead us to eternal torment.
If we were to keep a diary of time spent in trivial or evil pursuits versus time spent in growing in an intimate relationship with God, which nature would we find ourselves feeding the most?
Now that Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, has come into the world to set us free from the control of our sin nature, we are without excuse for persevering in sin.
We no longer have to feed the old nature. In Christ, we are new creatures who have been set free to pursue holiness by feeding upon the love of God that is revealed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
As we feed on the Word and appropriate it into our lives by imitating Christ and abiding in Him, we will experience all of the promised blessings of abiding.
Friendship with Jesus, Jesus’ joy, the awareness of God’s love and the love of others, answered prayers, and lives spent glorifying God by doing the things for which He created us are just a few of the benefits of feeding our souls on the good food that God has provided in His Word.
Father, help me to feast on the nourishment of Your Word. Amen.
