God’s Life Support Systems

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

There has been a debate raging over when to pull the plug on brain dead people who cannot live without being connected to life support systems for breathing and taking nourishment.

Thanks be to God that he never pulls the plug on the life support systems He provides for unbelievers.

Although actually dead men walking in darkness and despair; God keeps His life support system and the offer of salvation plugged in until the very last breath is drawn. This is the lesson of the thief on the cross and the workers in the vineyard.

For the believer who receives God’s wonderful gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ, God provides a built-in, unpluggable life support system in the person and presence of the Holy Spirit.

He has also been given as a guarantee that God’s eternal life support will never be unplugged from any true believer.

The true believer may stumble and fall in the flesh from time to time, but the Holy Spirit is at work making intercession to God for us, and convicting us of our need for confession and repentance, and imparting God’s grace to us through prayer, the Word, Baptism, Lord’s Supper, circumstances, and the encouragement and fellowship of other believers.

The Holy Spirit will do whatever it takes to complete the task that He has begun in our lives. He will provide the chastening we need to bring us back, the scourging we might need to develop the humility, long suffering, love, and obedience of Christ within us, which is our hope of glory.

We may “pull the plug” on God but He will never forsake or “pull the plug” on us. There is eternal life support for all believers!

Father, thank you for the assurance of your forever and unconditional love, forgiveness, and acceptance in Christ. Amen
