The Statue of Liberty
“He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” Luke 4:18b
The Statue of Liberty was given by the people of France as a symbol of their friendship that was established during the American revolution.
Over the past 100+ years it has become a symbol of freedom and democracy for the millions who have entered this country seeking a new and better life.
As believers, we have a statue of Liberty that is embodied in the Cross. Whether we wear it, bear it, kneel down to it, or just carry it in our hearts, we need to be ever mindful of the freedom and liberty that it represents, and the price that was paid.
Jesus’ death on the cross at Calvary set us free from all condemnation and bondage to sin and set us free from our death penalty for the wages of sin. When we receive Jesus Christ as Savior we become empowered to overcome sin and live in total freedom from bondage to it.
The liberty of our new life in Christ gives us liberty to live lives fully pleasing to Him and fruitful in every good work. This liberty makes us want to do the things that please instead of have to do them. It changes not only our conduct, but also our motives.
We no longer have to lead lives of trying to appease God but we have the privilege of leading lives that please God, and the power to do it.
The freedom that we enjoy as Americans did not and does not come cheap. Thousands upon thousands have died to gain it and maintain it over the centuries. Unfortunately it becomes more and more abused and used as a license to promote evil and abominations.
God’s grace cost us nothing, but cost His Son everything. We dare not abuse it and use it as a license for sinning.
Father, let your cross be my statue of liberty for celebrating my freedom and liberty in Christ. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
Have a wonderful holiday
Timothy
