Are We Worth Imitating?
Read Ephesians 5, Proverbs 3
Are We Worth Imitating?
“Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.” 3 John 1:11
It should be a sobering thought that someone might be imitating us.
As parents, we can be sure that our attitudes and conduct will be imitated by our children in some way. We are all preaching “sermons in shoes” to our family and those with whom we come in contact in everyday life.
Hero worship and role models are a zillion dollar industry in sports and entertainment circles. It is sickening to see some of the role models young and old alike have chosen to glorify and try to emulate. As believers, we are held to a high standard of being role models worth imitating. Others should know that we are Christians by our love, our speech, and our conduct.
The light of the gospel should be shining brightly in us and through us. The question of whether others can see Jesus in us should give us all cause to honestly ponder the answer to this question: “Are we worth imitating?”
Even more importantly, we need to judge ourselves and see what we need to do to become worth imitating. We need to earnestly seek the power of the Holy Spirit to change the things in our conduct and attitudes that need to be changed so that we do not bring shame to the name of Christ in our everyday life.
Scripture commands us to be imitators of Christ. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and came to earth as the Word incarnate to teach us how we should follow Him and imitate His life.
Our aim should always be to be building blocks and never stumbling blocks for the cause of Christ for our children, family, friends, fellow believers, and especially those who don’t know the love of God because they have never seen it modeled.
Father, by the power of Your Spirit, help me to be worth imitating. In Jesus’ name, Amen
