What Will We Leave Behind?

Read 1 Corinthians 13, Psalm 49
What Will We Leave Behind?

“You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.” John 15:16. NLT

Sooner or later we are going to leave this world and move onward and upward if we have faith in Jesus. The bright future we have in Christ and His promises should cause us all to rejoice.

We should all be striving to leave something behind. Instead of immediately thinking of possessions and to whom we will leave them, we need to think about leaving fruit that will last in a legacy of love.

Jesus left us His whole life bound between the covers of a book as a legacy of love. He spent His life loving and serving others and calling them into a personal relationship with God. He died that we may live forever with Him in heaven.

If we have been blessed with children, we are going to leave behind a genetic legacy of inherited physical and temperamental traits that will live on through succeeding generations.

Too often we leave children “stuff” to fight over instead of memories to cherish and rejoice over as they share their heritage with each other and their children.

Our family fortune that we should be thinking about leaving behind should not be the inheritance of material wealth but the riches of God’s grace exemplified by a fruitful life well lived and shoes of faith worth filling.

We need to invest our time, talents, and treasures into being fruitful in good works that bless the lives of others by loving, serving, and encouraging them, just as Jesus has loved, served, and encouraged us.

We should seek to leave behind added value to every person God has placed in our lives by being conduits of His love, grace, and kindness.

Father, help me to leave behind a legacy of love that will endure in others long after I’m gone. In Jesus’ name, Amen
