Timeless Friends
“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:23-25
The parable of the prodigal son teaches that our wise, kind, Heavenly Friend is delighted to welcome us back and renew our friendship just as if we had never left. This eternal truth makes this timeless Friend even more special.
One of the sacred delights of life is the timeless quality of special friendships. If we are very blessed, we will have a few special people who we can go years without seeing, and then see and enjoy just as if it had just been a few days since we saw them.
These friendships transcend time, distance, circumstances and neglect. We can run into an old childhood friend, classmate, cousin, or church friend and have shared experiences come to mind and be greatly blessed. This is probably why reunions of any kind are so enjoyable for so many people.
In this transient society where we move around a lot, it is sometimes very difficult to go home again because there have been so many of them that we haven’t been able to establish any roots anywhere. When we do go back, those special people who are on our “must see” list will be the ones we seek out and enjoy seeing and visiting.
It is good to know that people are universal. We find the good, bad, and ugly wherever we go, and might even meet someone today who will become a special friend for life.
It’s even better to know that we have a timeless friend in our Lord Jesus Christ, who will stick closer to us than a biological brother. He will never leave us or forsake us. Although we may sometimes move away from Him, He will always be our friend and brother and give us a glad welcome back when we come back home to Him.
Father, thank You for the blessing of my timeless friends but even more for the blessing of my friendship with Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen
